Toshiba makes efforts to talk to the company backed by Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates for joining and developing the advanced nuclear reactors. Japanese electronics maker Toshiba is the world’s number 3 chipmaker, which is behind Intel & Samsung Electronics; and it acclaimed that they will re begin the plans for building a factory for making NAND flash memory chips, with the recovering of global economy. Toshiba owns US nuclear firm Westinghouse and it said that it was in introductory talks with the Gates-backed firm TerraPower. This was done for the development of so-called traveling-wave reactors, which are designed to use depleted uranium as fuel and thought to hold the promise of running up to 100 years without refueling. This concept is compared with traditional light-water reactors, which require refueling once every several years. Small-sized reactors, such as traveling-wave reactors, would make a good fit for growing and developing markets. In case, you put a regular reactor, like the ones used in Japan, for some emerging nations, it would create over capacity and make it tough for backing the reactor up for the case of taking off the unit line for maintenance. These reactors will be in demand for developing nations. Bill Gates can invest several billion dollars for this project, along with the commercialization for occurring in next 10 years or even more. Toshiba spokesman Keisuke Ohmori acclaimed that these talks with TerraPower are at an primary stage and nothing has been decided by both the companies yet. Toshiba is developing its own mini nuclear reactors designed for operating continuously for 30 years and it anticipates about 80 % of the technologies used in the reactor under development can be applied to traveling-wave reactors. One obstacle for commercialization of traveling-wave reactors is the development of materials, which are capable of withstanding nuclear reactions for such long periods of time. Toshiba said that it decided to start construction of its 5th NAND flash memory plant in July in reaction to a recovery in demand, driven in part by the growing popularity of smartphones. The production is slated for early 2011. Toshiba originally planned to begin building the factory in Mie in central Japan last spring and to complete it this year, but it put the project on hold due to the industry wide slouch.
