iPhone 4 antenna issue: User error or design flaw?

6/28/2010 8:19:57 AM

Customers have used iPhone 4 for a few days and it has been demonstrated that there is a revealing of signal loss, when it is gripped in a certain manner. Apple has a fixable alternative for the way it is held out. It is a troublesome way in which customers hold this flaw in design of Apple phone.

iPhone 4 made its first sale on last Thursday. It has 2 antennas, which are built close to the metal band around the outside surface of the device. One running on left side of phone is for Bluetooth and WiFi and the other on right side is cellular reception. This design was made for improvement of reception of signals.

These complaints originated by Wednesday night from the users who got early delivery. They said that if the phone is gripped in a way touching the left bottom area of phone, reception gets degradation or vanishes in some cases. This problem varied through place, person and device. This issue was acknowledged last night.

The gripping of phone will make attenuation of the performance of antenna with some places being worst than others, which depends on the placement of antennas. This is a reality for every wireless phone. If you get this experience, be sure to avoid the gripping to the lower left corner in such a way that it covers both sides of black strip in the metallic band or use any case with it.

When this happens, it appears to get solved by guarding the left bottom corner with the silicon case or there can be application of Scotch tape, which points to fault of the phone.
Antenna is built in the bottom side of the phone. Reason: Meeting FCC requirements regarding specific absorption rate or SAR and the extension of antenna went out several years ago.

The makers of phone make more constraints for making increased smaller phones with sophisticated design and features. They can fit large batteries and processors to small packages, along with flashy materials and specific visual. iPhone 4 has still to begin for getting choices and prioritizing issues. People also had opinion that placement at vicinity of band is something attractive.

It is a bad thing if the reception is lost over iPhone 4. There are many phone makers who have put internal antenna near the bottom back of the phone. Apple did the same with previous iPhone versions. There was inclusion of the warnings in user manual or sticker removed before use. Users are warned to avoid that area and nothing else.

The phones like HTC Nexus One, Motorola i1 and Palm Pre have bottom facing antennas. In many cases, there is no drop in reception or audio clarity, even when phones are held in hand. There are some ways to fix the antenna issues. The piece of tape over antenna area in the lower left of the phone or purchasing the rubber case is the solution suggested by Apple. Of course, it is not a good option for suggesting the payment of $199-299 and then paying $30 for fixing the design issue.

The possible customers will begin for demanding less creepy design and more of the phones. This cycle repeats itself. It appears like the shape of a pendulum. Apple continues for selling phones at a great rate, about 1.5 million iPhone 4 sets in one day only.
